MURDER
Differences between the Original episodes and the remastered episodes
Sometimes people make mistakes, and we can all be forgiven for that.....
......but mess with our Red Dwarf and we'll....we'll....better not go into that, it's a family site!
General and Series 1 by Gavin, with the help of Domus
Series 2 and 3 by Domus, with the help of Gavin
GENERAL CHANGES (FOR ALL EPISODES)
Opening sequence
Original model sequence has been reshot using CG model, with Lister sat in suspended seat rather than standing. Camera pulls away in a single shot. Once ship is revealed, montage sequence begins with series 3-8 music.
Montage
Clips from series 1-3, new CG shots of Starbug, fireball erupting from an asteroid to reveal title logo. Sequence is the same for all episodes of series 1-3, except Parallel Universe with no opening sequence, and one replacement shot in the series 3 montage.
Ship
Original model sequences replaced by CG shots. New ship considerably longer, deeper red colour, more metallic, small moon is gone, engine at the back redesigned. Generally more detail.
[You're gonna do descriptions of all the ship shots aren't you? The same 4 or 5 shots are re-used over and over, so its worth describing them.]
Gav's comment: New model shots replace good dialogue. They last too long to be simply expositional -- showing off the special effects at the expense of dialogue. Very bad!
Titles
All titles and captioning have been replaced. The large episode titling is gone. Titles now appear in small white serif font [you know which font?] over the opening scene. The video versions have a "remastered" logo with the title, the TV versions do not. As well as saying "Written by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor", it also says "Created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor" too.
Closing credits
Replaced overhead flyby with planet in the background. New small white font credits and end production card.
Remastered sound and picture quality
Original picture has been treated to look more professional... re-encoded
to digital [?]. The laughter track has been fiddled
with -- some genuine laughter removed, and some canned laughter added
[I haven't noted down the exact occurrence, sorry]. A lot of background
atmos sound has been added which wasn't there previously.
Gav's comment: This is one of the only worthwhile changes. The early series looked rough because of the "live" feel it had. It occasionally looked like a badly videotaped stageplay. The refined picture and sound makes it look more professional.
Re-filmed Holly
Norman Lovett re-filmed some of his dialogue for The End, Balance of Power,
Waiting For God and Confidence and Paranoia. I won't list every occurrence,
but I will list when his dialogue has been changed, added or cut.
Some of the previously full-screen shots of Holly's head have been inserted onto TV screens instead.
General effects
Star/nebula inserts in windows. Too frequent to list every occurrence.
THE END
Addition (effect):
Two skutters move past the screen, leaving a trail of dust, superimposed over the "14b" scene.
[Add your own hateful comment about this atrocious "special" effect :-) ]
Replacement (effect):
New sound effect for food dispenser.
Addition (effect):
Background sound in opening scene: woman's voice on public address system.
Edit change:
Scene ending with Rimmer saying to Todhunter, "You're finished, you big lig, aaahhh!". Transition to next scene (ship sequence in this case) lasts a second longer.

Addition (effect):
Ping-pong noise to signal Holly's announcement.
Addition (dialogue)
Holly:
"Why I have to make these announcements when I've got an IQ of 6000 I don't know. It's just so demeaning. I could have invented a new theory of quantum mechanics instead of saying that. S'just not right, really isn't. Instead of saying that stuff about quantum mechanics just then I could have re-written Hamlet and made it really good. It's just not right, not right at all."
[You'll have to transcribe the dialogue of the original version, I don't have it with me]
Edit change:
Scene is cut away from before we see Rimmer drop Lister's jacket on the floor, then Lister trips Rimmer from behind as they leave.
Cut (dialogue):
MacIntyre:
"I want to thank everybody for giving me such a marvellous funeral. I've just seen the vid. And I want to thank the captain for his beautiful eulogy. Beautiful. But I still don't understand why he didn't use the one I wrote."
(general laughter)
"This must seem pretty spooky for everyone, but I don't want you to think of me as someone who's dead, more as someone who's no longer a threat to your marriages." (More laughter). "I think Joe knows what I'm talking about." (Joe laughs harder than anyone).
Addition/replacement (dialogue):

RIMMER: "Da DA DA black card, black card, black card, DA DA DA black
card..."
LISTER: "I was talking about something else!"

RIMMER: "You are black-carding me?"
LISTER: "That's only the beginning, Rimmer."
and more:

Scene ends before Cat says: "Did I ever tell you about my feet? My investigating
feet? Once upon a time, there was an old man..."
Addition (effect):
Cat priest's urn being shot into space.
CONFIDENCE AND PARANOIA
Addition (dialogue):
Holly's opening dialogue now has:
"Additional: Last week we discovered the cryogenically frozen body of tycoon Albert Nimble. He'd been launched into space in the hope of encountering a life form who could cure his terrible disease. We revived him, explained we were the last human ship in existence, and we just wanted to let him know we couldn't help him. New sound effect for Rimmer being turned on. [maybe I should say switched on... I hate to think what he sounds like when he gets turned on... hehe :-)]
ME²
Cut (dialogue):
Where Lister reads sign on the Rimmers' door:
"Second Technician Arnold J Rimmer, and Second Technician Arnold J Rimmer."
Cut (dialogue):
LISTER: "Just because your name's Rimmer, and even though these headlines are about other people, you've cut them out, put them on your wall, and people will think they're about you?"

Cut shot of Cat in spacesuit in Blue Midget landing bay. Says, "Aaaaaooowww! Wait for me!"
Addition (effect):
Blue Midget leaving RD. [Looks rubbish, firstly because RD looks far too long, but also because it looks stationary...we all know that the ship would be travelling very fast, because it was at light speed less than a year ago.]
Edit change:
Additional shots of Kryten on space bike at the end. [Which I like]
BETTER THAN LIFE
Changed dialogue:
Holly's opening dialogue changed from:
"Additional: Loneliness weighs heavily on us all. Personally, the only thing that keeps me going is the thought that we are over sixty billion miles away from the nearest Berni Inn."
To:
"Additional: We have been travelling through the universe for 3 million years, and there are many things we've discovered. The highest form of life is man, and the lowest form of life is a man who has a train set."

(They carry on and Marilyn throws a pillow at him.)
CAT: "What a pest!"
and later:
CAT: "I'm dating Marilyn Monroe and also I have another girlfriend who's a mermaid. She's half woman, half fish." (He starts licking and kissing a photograph then turns round.) "It's Miranda, my girlfriend."
(As she comes out of the water, we see the top half of her is a fish and the bottom half is a woman.)
HOLLY: "Somehow I imagined she'd be a woman on top and a fish on the bottom."
CAT: "No! That's the stupid way round." (He sticks his tongue out briefly, grins and waves.)

where the two faces cross over one another.

Cut (shot):
Kryten pulling Cat on a dogsled.
POLYMORPH
Addition (shot):
There is a long CG sequence added at the beginning, showing the polymorph's view as it ventures through the Dwarf's vents.
Replacement (effect):
The polymoph/snake leaps off Kryten's chest at Lister, instead of Kryten sort of throwing it at him.
Replacement (effect):
Rimmer morphs into the polymorph, instead of his face distorting in a funhouse style.
Replacement (shot):
The ending is changed. Instead of the the RD four walking past the camera, with an additional Lister who turns into the Polymorph, we see a basketball bouncing down a hall. Over the ball we read the caption: "Epiloge: The 2nd polymorph, which was much less intelligent than the 1st, stowed away in Lister's clean underpants drawer, where it died many years later of old age."

Replacement (effect):
Craig Charles' 'he's got cash, yeah, he's got money' has been rescored to a lyricless beat.
Addition (effect):
The statue now urinates water.
There are simply too many differences between the original script and the final version to mention here. It's worth a look, though, to see how GN managed to salvage a rather flat re-hash of the UK 'The End' into something quite humorous. This is the original script, and here's a transcript of the filmed episode

There may be other differences, some more subtle, some glaring but were missed anyway.
